Tohoku University Research Data Lake "IZUMI"

Overview of IZUMI

Tohoku University has been operating the Tohoku University Research Data Lake “IZUMI” as the core of its research data infrastructure since June 2025. The name “IZUMI” was chosen with the idea that the system would serve as a spring of knowledge. It is also derived from Mount Izumigatake, a mountain familiar to the citizens of Sendai.

“IZUMI” has an effective storage capacity of approximately 5 PB and stores research data owned by individual researchers and laboratories. It also provides functions for group sharing of research data and public disclosure.

In developing IZUMI, the system was designed with emphasis on the following three principles:

  • Agility: ready for immediate use
  • Usability: easy and intuitive to use
  • Interoperability: capable of connecting with other systems

By developing a research data infrastructure centered on IZUMI, it is expected that the utilization of valuable research data generated by researchers—both within and outside the university—will accelerate, and that research DX leveraging Tohoku University’s AI technologies will be further advanced.
